Plant Theatre is the modern-day equivalent of an auricula theatre - a popular method of showcasing pots of colourful auricula primroses during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The first auricula theatres were created in France and Belgium in the 17th century to protect delicate flowers, such as carnations, tulips and auriculas, from the wind and rain.
In the 19th century, most English country estates had an auricula theatre in their formal gardens. Some even had elaborate proscenium arches and trompe-l'œil curtains!
